The passage through which we inhale air is the throat. And this air may contain pollutants, viruses and bacteria, most of the time that affects our throat and causes infection like tonsillitis. Tonsils are two sacs of lymphatic tissues situated at the back of the throat. These tonsils get easily infected and thus we call it tonsillitis. However, there are home remedies for infected tonsils besides the doctor’s medicines. But first of all it is necessary to understand the causes and symptoms of infected tonsils

The basic function of the tonsils is to give resistance against infections like colds. But the trouble begins when they get inflamed, become enlarged and interfere in the normal swallowing and eating. Therefore, it is better to take precautions before it becomes serious. Symptoms of infected tonsils are:

  • Constant Sore throat
  • White or yellow coating on the tonsils
  • Throat getting reddish
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Swollen cheeks
  • Hoarse voice
  • Mild fever (of 100 degrees or higher)
  • Ear pain
  • Bad smelling breath

  • Spreading of virus or bacteria from an infected person to any person through coughing and sneezing can cause infection to tonsils.
  • Pollutants in the air can lead to tonsil infection.
  • Even fungi or parasites, especially in people with poor health can infect tonsils.
  • One of the causes of infected tonsils is the Pathogens (droplets of disease-causing agents), which get on the skin or on the object that comes in contact with the mouth, nose and eyes.
  • There are number of respiratory viruses that can cause tonsil infection like, the Reovirus, Adenovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, Influenza virus and Echoviruses.

  • First basic thing that has to be done is the gargle, with 1 cup of warm water mixed with 1 teaspoon of salt. Regular gargle will lessen the pain and clean the tonsils.
  • Even a gargle done with fenugreek seeds simmered in water reduces the pain.
  • In case of fever, sponging the face with cool water will reduce it.
  • Drinking hot fluids like, tea, coffee and soup can give comfort to the throat and keep the body warm.
  • Milk mixed with pinch of turmeric powder and pepper powder is of great help.
  • Combination of juices of beet, carrot and cucumber gives good benefit. These juices can be taken individually too.
  • It is best to stay in a warm place.

However, altogether these are the possible home remedies for infected tonsils.
