What is Itching?
Itching is a condition that is best described as an uneasy irritation of the skin that compels a person to scratch the affected area. This is a common problem which is faced by almost all of us. Though the exact cause is not known yet variety of causes including allergies, insect bites, stings, skin disease or even poor hygiene can cause this problem. This immensely annoying malady however does not usually lead to any medical complications. Nonetheless it is irritating as the skin faces an uneasy situation and you would want to constantly scratch the affected area. Consequently this can bruise the skin, making it sore and even painful.
What is the cause of itching?
- Usually people with dry skin are more prone to itching.
- Sunburn and insect bites are the other causes, which can induce itching.
- Exposure to certain chemicals and allergy to a certain medication could start an itching sensation in an individual.
- Maladies as chicken pox in their last or drying stages can lead to intense itching
- Parasites as lice in the body it or other reasons like cold weather, overexposure to water and hot baths may cause this problem.
- In later part of pregnancy due to skin stretching as well as hormonal change there can be itching.
- Skin diseases like Psoriasis, Seborrheic dermatitis, Urticaria, Pityriasis rosea can cause severe itching.
What are the symptoms of itching?
Itching is characterized by an uneasy irritation that is accompanied by red spots, scaly patches that makes one tend to scratch continually resulting in scraped skin . Prolonged scratching and rubbing can also lead to thick and scarred skin with blisters.
Home remedies for itching
Itching that is not due to any medical conditions can be relieved to a great extent by using home remedies. Some are as follows –
- A popular home remedy is to take bath using a can of evaporated milk to which oatmeal and baking soda have been added. This works well to soothe the itching.
- Cornstarch is also effective remedy and it really helps if you pour some into your bath water or dust it onto your body.
- Two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar which is added to your bath water helps to relieve itchy skin while if the itching is due to heat and insect bites use baking soda in your cold bath water to get relief.
- To get relief from itching use any of these ingredients like: aloe Vera, cod liver oil, lemon juice, vitamin E oil, wheat germ oil, or witch hazel tea .
- Consume burdock, chickweed, goldenseal, plantain, or yellow dock in capsule form.
- It is also a great idea to rub the affected area lightly with a pumice stone during bath. Wash yourself with a mild soap, apply rubbing alcohol, and dab a thick layer of Vaseline over it to get relief from itching.

have been itching for 4 weeks..no rash, or other signs..starts with my scalph..body gets hot..and it then moves to other parts of body..hair on arms stand up..try derma smoothe at night to rub on scalph..some shampoos stop it ..but then I can start feeling the itch starting up..going to derm..but waiting on referrel..anybody have this
I believe my severe itching is due to my pregnacy
(3rd trimester) as my mother suffered the same when pregnant with me. If you know of any relief,
please help, I’m miserable.
